Mike: The effects of our beloved technology

Editor's note: We challenged all of our finalists to write a blog post to "Tell us about a current topic that's of importance to your generation."

I often contemplate technology and how it affects our daily lives. This is a blog contemplating the effects of our beloved technology.

Technology is something that is ever changing. Just look at how computers have rapidly advanced in the past 10 years. We can now hold a computer in our hands that 30 years ago took up an entire floor of a building. Even the newest and greatest computers are practically obsolete in a years time. We are the generation who grew with technology. We lived when Pac Man or Super Mario Brothers were cutting edge. But is technology a good thing for us?

Obviously, ease of communication has been a great positive to technology. We can now connect with friends all over the world within seconds. See family in Colorado from Buenos Aires. But do you feel that we as a generation are enslaved by technology? Without our phones by our side we feel like something is missing; cut off from the rest of the world.

Technology has made us impersonal. Real face to face chatting has turned to speaking with each other through a TV, hand written letters have turned to e-mail and texting, and going to the store has turned into going to Amazon. We all live in our own little bubbles of technology. I am by no means saying I’m against technology; I’m using a computer and the internet in Hilton Head, South Carolina to connect with all of you. But I do believe technology makes us lazy. Why read a book for research when you can simply Google the subject on the internet and have millions of hits to choose from? Why write your own paper when you can copy and paste from the internet?

Technology has changed the way we think and do everything. Its convenience has made us imprisoned by it. What do you think? One thing is for sure, no one can get away from technology.

Mike
